Intermediate Knitting Course
Build confidence, precision, and advanced technique in a supportive studio setting
This 10-week intermediate knitting course is designed for knitters who are comfortable with basic techniques such as knit and purl stitches, casting on, and casting off, and are ready to expand their skills further.
Across weekly 2-hour sessions, students will deepen their technical understanding while working through progressively more advanced methods. The course balances structured demonstrations with hands-on practice, allowing participants to refine technique, correct mistakes confidently, and begin more ambitious knitting projects.
By the end of the programme, students will have strengthened their technical foundation and developed the confidence to undertake larger garments or accessories independently.
What You’ll Learn
Understand yarn properties and substitution — choosing appropriate fibres for different projects and achieving accurate gauge through proper swatching and blocking.
Read and interpret written patterns and charts — working both flat and in the round with clarity and confidence.
Identify and fix common mistakes — including dropped stitches, miscrossed cables, and lace errors, without needing to unravel entire sections.
Work advanced stitch techniques — including cables, lacework, and short rows (wrap & turn and German short rows).
Develop shaping and construction skills — using short rows, jogless stripes, and helical knitting techniques.
Explore finishing techniques — including mattress stitch seaming, picking up stitches neatly, button bands, I-cords, and three-needle bind off.
Introduction to colourwork — managing tension in stranded knitting and reading Fair Isle-style charts.
Block and finish garments properly — understanding wet versus steam blocking and fibre care.
