Photography Masterclass – Advanced (Weekend Course)

€220.00
Date & Time:

Take your photography beyond the fundamentals with an intensive weekend of hands-on learning, real-world shooting and professional guidance.

Designed for photographers who already understand the basics of aperture, shutter speed and ISO, this Weekend Photography Masterclass is about putting that knowledge into practice — learning to work confidently in different environments, make stronger creative decisions and, above all, develop your photographic eye.

Led by two professional photographers with over 20 years of industry and teaching experience, the weekend combines indoor learning with guided photography sessions around Gozo, before finishing with an introduction to Adobe Lightroom and a professional critique of the photographs captured throughout the course.

This isn't about sitting in a classroom learning more camera settings. It's about getting out there, camera in hand, and learning to see, think and shoot like a photographer.

(Note: This course is limited to just 14 participants.)

What You Will Learn

  • Exposure: From Technical to Intentional – Refresh aperture, shutter speed and ISO before moving into metering, exposure compensation, dynamic range and challenging exposures — learning when to trust your camera and when to override it.

  • Beyond the Rules of Composition – Move past the rule of thirds into visual hierarchy, layering, negative space, balance, perspective and subject separation, learning to simplify complex scenes and build stronger images.

  • Reading & Shaping Natural Light – Learn to recognise and work with direction, quality, colour and contrast, including backlighting, silhouettes, open shade, golden hour and difficult high-contrast conditions.

  • Lens, Perspective & Depth – Explore how focal length, compression, distortion, viewpoint and depth of field change the relationship between your subject and its environment — and how to use them deliberately.

  • Movement & Creative Camera Techniques – Use shutter speed creatively through panning, motion blur, freezing action, long exposures and Intentional Camera Movement (ICM).

  • The Photographer's Eye: Working on Location – Photograph across Gozo while learning to read a location, anticipate light, isolate subjects, work a scene, eliminate distractions and find compelling compositions in real-world environments.

  • Lightroom & The Digital Darkroom – Develop your RAW files using tonal and colour control, highlight and shadow recovery, cropping and local adjustments, with an emphasis on enhancing rather than rescuing an image.

  • Image Selection & Professional Critique – Learn to cull, compare and select your strongest photographs before analysing your work with Katherine — understanding not only what works, but what could have been done differently at the moment of capture.

Who Are Your Instructors?

Led by Katherine Huck and Charles Swinden, professional photographers and educators with over 20 years of industry and teaching experience, this Masterclass brings decades of professional knowledge directly into the field.

Having run their own photography business in Canada, they'll teach and photograph alongside you, demonstrating techniques, setting practical challenges and providing real-time guidance on exposure, light, composition and creative decisions as you shoot.

Gozo Becomes Your Classroom

A significant part of the Masterclass takes place on location around Gozo, where techniques are taught and immediately put into practice in real-world conditions.

You'll work through practical exercises and photographic challenges, learning to read light, work a scene, refine compositions and make deliberate technical and creative decisions, with professional guidance and feedback throughout.

Who Is This Masterclass For?

This is an advanced-level photography course and is not designed for complete beginners.

Students should already understand the basic principles of aperture, shutter speed, ISO and exposure and should be comfortable with the basic operation of their camera.

Don't worry if you're still a little rusty — the Masterclass begins with an important exposure and manual settings refresher before moving into the practical sessions.

It is the ideal next step for students who have completed our Photography Course for Beginners, although photographers with equivalent knowledge and experience are equally welcome.

(Note: This course is limited to just 14 participants on a first-come first-served basis)
