The Naturalistic Animal Drawing & Painting course at Art Academy explores how to capture animals convincingly through drawing and painting, including creating personal pet portraits. Through demonstrations, practical studies and individual guidance, you will learn to observe proportions, understand underlying structure and depict the features and textures that give each animal its character.
Choosing & Taking Reference Photos – Learn what makes a useful reference and how lighting, angle, camera position and image clarity can help you capture your pet for a portrait.
Observation & Proportion – Break down animal subjects into simple shapes and establish accurate proportions.
Anatomy & Structure – Explore how the skeleton and major muscle groups influence an animal’s shape, posture and movement.
Fur, Feathers & Surface Textures – Suggest texture through the direction, length and placement of marks.
Gesture & Movement – to capture weight, balance and characteristic poses.
Light & Form – Build convincing volume through tonal drawing, highlights and shadows.
Colour Mixing & Application – Observe and mix colours to paint natural markings and variations in an animal’s coat or plumage.
Pet Portraits & Likeness – Capture the distinctive eyes, expression, markings and proportions that make an animal recognisable.
Composition & Finished Study – Develop an animal drawing or painting from your chosen reference, with guidance on backgrounds, focal points and refinement.
This course welcomes students of all levels, although some drawing experience is recommended. Students may work from photographs of their own pets or other animal subjects. Exercises and individual feedback will be adapted to each student’s experience.
Mode of Study: Once weekly (2 hours for each lesson)
Duration: 10 Lessons
Location: Art Academy Mosta (131, Constitution Street, Mosta)
Requirements: Ages 16+, Students must bring their own art materials & tools

Certification: Upon attendance of 80% of the Course, students will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance
