Date & Time:

Take your mosaic skills to the next level with this Level 2 Mosaic Course, designed for students who have completed our Beginners Mosaic Course or already have previous experience working with mosaics.

Building on the fundamental skills of designing, cutting, assembling and grouting, this 10-week course introduces more advanced mosaic techniques and construction methods. You’ll explore outdoor mosaics, the double direct method and the indirect method, learning how and when to use each technique while working towards more ambitious and technically challenging projects.

Guided by experienced mosaic artist Jackie Micallef, you’ll develop greater confidence, precision and independence while expanding the possibilities of what you can create with mosaic.

What You’ll Learn

  • Advanced Mosaic Planning & Design – Develop more complex designs while considering andamento, composition, colour, texture and the direction of your tesserae.

  • Outdoor Mosaic Techniques – Learn how mosaics for exterior environments differ from indoor work, including suitable substrates, adhesives, materials and finishing methods for durability and weather resistance.

  • The Double Direct Method – Explore this versatile technique by assembling your mosaic onto a temporary mesh or backing before transferring and installing the completed work onto its final surface.

  • The Indirect Method – Learn the traditional reverse technique, placing tesserae face-down onto a temporary surface before transferring the complete mosaic to its permanent substrate.

  • Choosing the Right Mosaic Method – Understand when to use direct, double direct or indirect techniques depending on the design, scale, surface and intended location of your mosaic.

  • Advanced Cutting & Placement – Refine your cutting skills and learn to work with greater accuracy, tighter spaces, curves and more intricate designs.

  • Adhesives, Substrates & Installation – Develop a deeper understanding of how different materials and surfaces affect the construction and longevity of a mosaic.

  • Grouting & Professional Finishing – Refine your grouting and finishing techniques to achieve cleaner, more professional results.

  • Individual Projects & Artistic Development – Apply your new skills to more ambitious mosaic projects with individual guidance throughout the course.
