This 10-week course offers a structured and comprehensive study of Gothic calligraphy. Through guided practice, you will develop precision, consistency, and control while working with traditional tools and historic letterforms.
Beginning with foundational strokes and progressing through structured script development, the course builds towards confident composition and finished work. No prior experience is required. By the end of the course, you will complete a resolved calligraphic piece demonstrating your understanding of Gothic structure, proportion, and design.
Learn to handle traditional tools with confidence — including correct use of broad-edged pens, nibs, ink, and layout equipment.
Understand the foundational strokes of Gothic script — developing control over pen angle, pressure, and stroke sequence.
Construct structured minuscules and capital forms — focusing on proportion, spacing, and rhythm.
Study Textura Quadrata and Rotunda scripts — recognising their distinctive characteristics and structural differences.
Explore Square (Imperial) Capitals and decorative Cadels — understanding how classical and ornamental forms complement Gothic writing.
Develop consistency in spacing and alignment — creating visually balanced words and short texts.
Create a composed final piece — applying structure, hierarchy, and layout principles to a finished calligraphic work.
Course Details
Mode of Study: Once weekly (2 hours for each lesson)
Duration: 10 Lessons
Location: Art Academy Mosta (131, Constitution Street, Mosta)
Requirements: Ages 16+, Students will need to bring their own art supplies
