Advanced Jewellery Making Course
Take your metalworking skills to the next level
This Advanced Jewellery Making Course is designed for students who already have a solid foundation in jewellery techniques and want to push their skills further. Over the duration of the course, you will consolidate essential metalworking skills and learn advanced techniques to create intricate, professional-quality pieces.
Fully guided you’ll explore precision soldering, stone setting, decorative wirework, and chasing & repoussé techniques. The course culminates in an independent project, where you plan, design, and execute a complex piece combining multiple advanced techniques.
The course will be taught by the exceptionally talented Gabriel Farrugia. A skilled artisan with a Bachelor of Arts in Jewellery Design from the renowned IED – Istituto Europeo di Design, Gabriel brings a wealth of expertise in sculpture, silverware, jewellery, and other artisanal creations. Gabriel’s mastery in design has earned him recognition for his latest work: the crown for the solemn coronation of Our Lady of Fatima in Guardamangia, Malta—a piece both designed and crafted by him.
What You’ll Learn:
Consolidation of Core Metalworking Skills:
Revise key skills such as cutting, shaping, filing, soldering.
Precision measuring and marking out advanced shapes
Controlled piercing/sawing for complex profiles
High-accuracy filing, shaping and surface refinement
Advanced soldering fundamentals (heat control, joint planning)
Workflow planning for multi-stage pieces
Advanced Soldering & Construction Techniques:
Multi-component alignment and assembly strategies
Managing sequential solder joints on layered constructions
Use of heat sinks and soldering aids to protect previous joins
Enhancing structural strength in layered elements
Surface preparation for seamless joins
Bezel (Cabochon) Stone Setting Techniques:
Measuring stones and forming custom bezels
Creating uniform seat surfaces
Securing bezels without distortion
Soldering bezel walls flush and neat
Burnishing and finishing around set stones
Prong (Claw) Stone Setting Techniques:
Forming and shaping prongs of consistent height
Locating and cutting accurate bearing seats
Tightening prongs for secure fit
Soldering prongs without overheating stones
Prong shaping and polishing to professional standards
Filigree & Decorative Silver Wire:
Learning how to create filigree elements by twisitng rizzol (silver wire)
Wire manipulation (curves, spirals, scrolls)
Integrating decorative wirework into solid forms
Finishing techniques for intricate surfaces
Chasing & Repoussé Techniques (Imartellar):
Working with pitch and chasing tools
Raising and defining metal relief
Creating texture, depth and form
Refining and finishing worked surfaces
Integrated Design & Independent Project Development:
Planning designs from concept to completion
Combining multiple advanced techniques
Managing fabrication sequence and time
Problem-solving during making
Professional finishing and presentation
Course Details
Mode of Study: Once weekly (2 hours per lesson)
Duration: 10 weeks
Location: Art Academy Mosta (131 Constitution Street, Mosta, Malta)
Requirements: Previous jewellery-making experience required, Ages 16+, Students will need to bring their own art materials and tools.
What’s Included: Shared classroom tools or equipment, hands-on teaching, visual aids, and individual attention.
Certification: Upon attendance of 80% of the Course, students will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance.
Language: The course is taught in English
